The Porto Metro map is easier once you separate two ideas: coloured lines show where the trains go, while Andante zones determine the fare.
Visitors mostly use the shared central corridor, Line E to the airport and Line D across the upper deck of Dom Luís I Bridge towards Gaia.
How to read the Porto Metro map
Several lines share the same central stations before separating towards different suburbs. Read both the line colour and final destination shown on the train.
Trindade is the main interchange for many visitors. São Bento is useful for the historic centre, while Jardim do Morro and General Torres serve the Gaia side.
Airport Metro Line E
Line E links Porto Airport with central Porto. Trindade is the most useful interchange for many hotels, while Bolhão can work for accommodation around Rua de Santa Catarina.
The airport journey requires a Z4 Andante ticket under the current zoning. Validate before boarding and again if you change line.
Metro to Gaia and Jardim do Morro
Line D crosses the upper level of Dom Luís I Bridge and stops at Jardim do Morro. This is useful for Serra do Pilar, the Gaia hillside and sunset views.
For the Gaia wine-cellar waterfront, the metro leaves you above the river. Expect a downhill walk or use another connection if steep streets are a concern.
The map and the fare zones are different
A line map tells you where the train goes; the zone map tells you which ticket to buy. Zones are counted as rings around the place where the journey begins.
Use the official Andante journey planner or station machine for an unfamiliar route instead of guessing from the number of stops.
Tickets, validation and contactless payment
A rechargeable Blue Andante card is the standard visitor option. Load the correct zone, then validate before entering the platform area.
Bank-card contactless travel is available only within the participating open-payment network. Do not assume every validator across the metropolitan system accepts a bank card.
Should you download a PDF map?
A saved official map is useful underground or when mobile data is unreliable. For live departures and disruptions, use the operators' current journey information rather than relying only on a static PDF.
Google Maps and Apple Maps can help with routing, but the official Andante and operator information remains the authority for fares and service changes.
