A city shaped by the Douro
From Ribeira, Porto climbs sharply towards the Cathedral, São Bento and Clérigos. Across the Dom Luís I Bridge, Gaia's historic port lodges line the opposite bank; the upper deck gives one of the clearest views over both riverfronts. To the west, tram 1 follows the Douro towards Foz and the Atlantic. These places look close on a map, but the climbs between Ribeira, Batalha and Bolhão are steep. Group visits by elevation and use the metro or funicular when it saves an unnecessary ascent.
