Getting from Porto Airport to the city centre is refreshingly simple.
You walk out of arrivals, follow the signs to the metro and roughly half an hour later you can be around Trindade or Bolhão.
No airport express train with three different ticket categories.
No mysterious transfer at a station somewhere in the suburbs.
For most visitors, I would take the metro.
There are situations where a taxi makes more sense, particularly late at night or with heavy luggage, but public transport here is unusually straightforward.

Metro from Porto Airport
Porto Airport has its own metro station.
Take Line E, the Violet Line, towards the city.
The airport's official website says services run every 20 or 30 minutes, depending on the day and time.
The journey to central stations such as Trindade takes around 30 minutes.
For me, this is the default option.
It is cheap, there is no traffic and you arrive directly in central Porto.
How much is the metro?
The airport to central Porto journey requires a Z4 Andante fare.
Visit Porto currently lists the occasional Z4 journey at 2.45€, using a rechargeable Andante Azul card.
Buy it from the ticket machines at the airport metro station.
One small but important detail.
Validate the ticket before travelling.
Porto's system uses validators rather than ticket barriers everywhere, and having purchased a ticket does not magically validate it through positive thinking.
Where should you get off?
For many visitors, Trindade is the most useful stop.
It is central and connects with other metro lines.
If your accommodation is around Bolhão or Santa Catarina, staying on the airport line a little longer may also work well.
For Ribeira or the streets around Clérigos, you may need to walk, change transport or take a short taxi from the centre depending on your hotel.
Porto's historic centre is compact.
Porto's hills are less cooperative.
What time does the metro operate?
Visit Porto currently states that Line E operates daily from around 06:00 until 01:00.
If your flight arrives well after midnight, I would use a taxi or other private transport.
Do not build a 1am transport plan around catching the final metro with four minutes to spare.
Airlines have an extraordinary ability to turn that sort of confidence into comedy.

Official taxis are available at the airport.
The journey time depends on traffic and where exactly you are staying.
A taxi makes more sense when you arrive very late, have several large bags, are sharing the fare between three or four people, or your hotel is somewhere inconvenient from the metro.
Taxis in Porto use regulated metered fares, with applicable supplements displayed in the vehicle.
For a group, the difference from buying several public transport tickets may feel less important than getting directly to the door.
Bus from the airport
Bus connections are also available.
The airport currently lists STCP services as well as regional operators and shuttles linking the airport with Porto and other northern Portuguese cities.
For a normal tourist staying centrally, I would still choose the metro.
The bus becomes more interesting when your destination happens to sit conveniently on one of its routes.
There is no prize for using every transport system in Porto before reaching your hotel.
Private transfer or shuttle
Several shuttle and transfer companies operate from Porto Airport.
This can be useful for larger groups, families or travellers arriving with enough luggage to suggest they are permanently relocating to Portugal.
Book in advance if you specifically want a driver waiting.
For most couples and solo travellers, metro or taxi is simpler.
Should you rent a car at Porto Airport?
Only if you actually need one afterwards.
If your first few days are entirely in Porto, I would leave the rental car until you are ready to leave the city.
Central Porto is walkable, parking can be inconvenient and the metro already solves the airport journey.
A car becomes useful when you start heading into the Douro, Minho or other parts of northern Portugal.
My choice
Metro during normal operating hours.
Taxi after midnight or with substantial luggage.
That is basically the whole decision.
Sometimes travel planning does not need a spreadsheet.
