October is one of those months in Porto where you can experience three seasons before dinner.
The morning starts cool.
Lunch happens in the sun.
At 4pm it rains.
At 5pm the sky clears and everybody pretends the previous hour never happened.
I still like October.
The summer crowds have eased, temperatures remain mild and the Douro Valley begins taking on autumn colours.
You just need to arrive with realistic expectations about the weather.
What is Porto weather like in October?
According to the latest IPMA climate normal for Porto and Pedras Rubras, covering 1991 to 2020, October has an average daytime maximum of 20.7°C and an average minimum of 12.9°C.
That is comfortable sightseeing weather.
You can easily get warm sunny afternoons.
You can also get rain.
Quite a lot of it.
The same IPMA climate normal records an average 148.9 mm of precipitation in October, with around 11 days receiving at least 1 mm of rain.
So when somebody says “Porto is lovely in October”, they are correct.
When somebody else says “bring a rain jacket”, they are also correct.
This city contains multitudes.
What should you pack?
Bring layers.
A light jacket or jumper works for mornings and evenings.
Add a proper waterproof outer layer.
I strongly prefer a rain jacket to an umbrella in Porto because wind and steep streets can turn umbrella management into a second activity.
Comfortable shoes matter too.
Historic Porto is covered in stone and cobbles, and wet cobbles become noticeably more interesting under your feet.
Pack sunglasses as well.
October rain does not mean permanent grey skies.
You will almost certainly use both the sunglasses and the rain jacket, possibly within the same hour.
Is Porto crowded in October?
Less than peak summer.
You will still see plenty of visitors around Livraria Lello, Ribeira and the Port wine cellars, but the city generally feels easier than July or August.
This makes October particularly good if you care about restaurants, museums and simply being able to walk around without every popular street feeling like a queue.
I would still book Livraria Lello and popular cellar tours ahead.
October is calmer.
It is not a secret.
Walk Porto when the weather is good
On a dry day, use the opportunity.
Walk from Bolhão through São Bento and Ribeira, cross Dom Luís I Bridge and finish around Jardim do Morro.
October temperatures are much kinder for Porto's hills than the hottest summer afternoons.
This may be the only time you hear someone describe climbing from Ribeira as “pleasant”.
Do not get carried away.
It is still uphill.
Visit Foz and the Atlantic
A clear October afternoon is excellent for Foz.
Walk from the mouth of the Douro towards the Atlantic beaches and stay for sunset.
You probably will not be planning an extended swim.
The Atlantic was hardly tropical in August either.
But for walking, photography and sitting beside the ocean, autumn works beautifully.
The light can be particularly good after rain clears.
Have a rainy day plan
Do not waste half the trip repeatedly checking the weather app.
Porto has plenty to do indoors.
Visit Serralves, the Soares dos Reis National Museum or the Portuguese Centre of Photography.
Tour a Port wine cellar in Gaia.
Sit down for a long lunch.
This is Portugal.
Eating for two hours during rain is culturally much easier to defend than it might be elsewhere.
Then go outside when the weather improves.
October is excellent for the Douro Valley
This would be high on my list.
Harvest activity is concentrated earlier in autumn, particularly September, but October can still be beautiful because the vineyard leaves begin changing colour.
The Douro landscape moves from summer green towards yellow, orange and red.
Visit Porto describes autumn as a period when the landscape changes after the grape harvest.
Choose a clear day if possible.
The valley is spectacular under dramatic clouds.
It is slightly less spectacular when the entire opposite hillside has disappeared into mist.
What should you eat in October?
This is the month when Porto's heavier food begins making more emotional sense.
Francesinha in 34°C July heat is a brave lifestyle choice.
In October, considerably more logical.
Look for roasted chestnuts from street sellers as autumn progresses.
Have Tripas à Moda do Porto, grilled fish or a long dinner around Cedofeita.
And this is a particularly good time to become more interested in Tawny Port.
I am sure that is exactly what the meteorologists intended.
Is October good for nightlife?
Yes.
Porto does not shut down after summer.
Bars around Galerias de Paris, Cedofeita and Baixa continue operating normally, and universities are fully active again by autumn.
The evenings are cooler, so rooftop season becomes less reliable.
Choose bars where being indoors would not feel like a disappointing backup plan.
Is October a good month to visit Porto?
I think so.
You trade reliable summer weather for fewer crowds, milder walking temperatures and a more autumnal atmosphere.
If your perfect trip requires five consecutive dry days, October is a gamble.
If you are happy adapting the schedule around occasional rain, it can be one of the nicest times to visit.
Bring the right jacket.
Everything becomes easier from there.
