Sunset in Porto is less about finding one secret viewpoint and more about choosing what you want in front of you when the sun goes down.
From Gaia, the sunset happens behind Porto's historic centre.
From Virtudes, you look west along the Douro towards the Atlantic.
And in Foz, there is nothing between you and the horizon except the ocean.
These are the places I would choose.
1–2. Jardim do Morro and Serra do Pilar
Jardim do Morro
Best for: the classic Porto sunset
Jardim do Morro is the obvious answer, and sometimes the obvious answer is correct.
The park sits immediately above the Gaia side of the Dom Luís I Bridge.
From the grass you look directly towards Ribeira and Porto's historic centre, while the sun falls behind the city.
It gets crowded in good weather.
Come early, particularly during summer, and treat the people, music and busy atmosphere as part of the experience.
Serra do Pilar
Best for: the view without sitting in the crowd
Walk a little higher from Jardim do Morro and you reach Serra do Pilar.
The official tourism board highlights the broad view from here over Porto, Gaia, the Dom Luís I Bridge and the Douro as far as the Arrábida Bridge.
The perspective is similar to Jardim do Morro but higher and wider.
If your priority is photography rather than atmosphere, this is where I would stand.
3–4. Passeio das Virtudes and Dom Luís I Bridge
Passeio das Virtudes
Best for: a relaxed evening in Porto
Virtudes looks west along the river towards the mouth of the Douro.
The official viewpoint description specifically highlights the perspective along the river towards Foz.
You do not get the Dom Luís I Bridge in front of you.
Instead, you get the Douro stretching towards the horizon.
Grab a drink nearby, sit down and stay until the light disappears.

Best for: sunset while sightseeing
You do not need to choose a formal viewpoint at all.
The upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge gives you an open view west across Ribeira, Gaia and the river.
My preferred route is to cross from Porto towards Gaia before sunset, spend some time around Jardim do Morro and then cross back after dark.
That way you see the same city in completely different light.
5–6. Palácio de Cristal and Foz do Douro
Jardins do Palácio de Cristal
Best for: a quieter garden sunset
The Palácio de Cristal gardens contain several small viewpoints rather than one main terrace.
From them, you can see Gaia's riverfront, Serra do Pilar, the Douro and the Arrábida Bridge.
This works particularly well if you do not want to be surrounded by the large sunset crowd in Gaia.
Walk around until you find the angle you like rather than stopping at the first terrace.
Foz do Douro
Best for: sunset over the Atlantic
If you want to see the sun disappear directly into the ocean, go to Foz.
Start near Felgueiras Lighthouse and walk north along the waterfront.
The beaches around Molhe and Homem do Leme give you an open Atlantic horizon and plenty of space to stop.
On clear evenings, this is probably the most straightforward sunset in the city: no rooftops, bridges or buildings, just sea.
7–8. Miradouro da Vitória and Fontainhas
Miradouro da Vitória
Best for: fitting sunset into a city-centre itinerary
Vitória is close to Clérigos and Ribeira, which makes it useful if you do not want to plan a separate sunset trip.
The view opens across Porto's rooftops towards Gaia and the Douro.
I would not cross the city specifically for it if you already plan to visit Jardim do Morro, but it is an excellent stop when you are already exploring the historic centre.
Fontainhas
Best for: something quieter
Fontainhas looks east rather than towards the Atlantic.
You see the Douro, Gaia and several bridges stretching away from central Porto.
Porto's tourism board includes Fontainhas among the city's natural viewpoints and notes its view towards Gaia and the bridges.
It is especially good if you already know the classic viewpoints and want a different perspective.
What time should you arrive for sunset?
I would arrive 30–45 minutes before sunset.
The colour before the sun disappears is often better than the final few minutes, and arriving earlier means you can choose where to sit.
Sunset time changes considerably between winter and summer, so check it on the day rather than relying on a fixed time.
My choice
For a first trip: Jardim do Morro + Serra do Pilar.
For somewhere more relaxed: Virtudes.
For the Atlantic: Foz.
For photography without planning a whole evening around sunset: Palácio de Cristal.
