Rent a car at OPO when the next part of the trip genuinely requires one, such as a regional route through northern Portugal. A car is usually unnecessary for the first days of a central Porto stay, where parking, narrow streets and hotel access can create more work than the airport journey solves.

How the Porto Airport terminal works

OPO uses one passenger terminal rather than separate airline terminals. Arrivals and departures occupy different levels and routes inside the same building, so there is no inter-terminal transfer to plan.

The important distinction is landside versus airside. Car rental desks, transport connections and public arrivals services are accessed before security, while the lounge and departure-gate facilities require a valid boarding pass and security screening.

Check the flight-information screens after entering the terminal because airline desks and gates can change. A compact building reduces walking compared with many hubs, but it does not remove check-in, document or boarding deadlines.

Passengers arriving from a route that requires border control complete that process before baggage reclaim. After collecting checked luggage, follow the customs channel that applies to your journey and continue into the public arrivals area.

Do not confuse passport control with customs: they are separate procedures serving different purposes. Travellers arriving entirely within Schengen normally do not complete an external-border passport check at Porto, although identity checks can still occur.
