Breakfast and brunch cafés

5 Best Breakfast and Brunch Spots in Porto

Discover 5 of the best places for breakfast and brunch in Porto, from specialty coffee and pancakes to quieter local cafés.

Brunch table with pancakes, eggs and coffee

Portuguese breakfast is traditionally simple.

Coffee, bread, maybe a pastry.

Then brunch arrived and apparently decided breakfast needed avocado, eggs, pancakes, granola and enough food to remove lunch from the schedule entirely.

Porto now has a very good brunch scene, particularly around Baixa and Cedofeita.

These are five places I would look at first.

1. CA Downtown

Best all round brunch

CA Downtown sits on Praça de Carlos Alberto, which is already one of my favourite parts of central Porto.

The location works particularly well if you are exploring Cedofeita, Clérigos or Carmo afterwards.

The menu moves far beyond a traditional Portuguese breakfast, with the sort of eggs, bowls, pancakes and larger plates you expect from a proper brunch restaurant.

This is the one I would choose if everyone in the group wants something different.

It is popular, so I would avoid arriving exactly when every other visitor in Porto suddenly remembers breakfast exists.

2. Tomás Coffee Brunch

Best for coffee and a relaxed breakfast

Tomás Coffee Brunch is on Rua de Fernandes Tomás, a short walk from Bolhão.

The setting feels smaller and more café focused than some of the larger brunch restaurants.

That makes it useful for a slower morning where coffee matters as much as the food.

I would stop here before Mercado do Bolhão or Santa Catarina rather than making breakfast an hour long expedition across the city.

Good breakfast should improve your morning.

It should not require logistics software.

Porto's brunch menus now go well beyond the traditional coffee-and-pastry breakfast.

3. Balta Brunch - Porto

Best near Virtudes

Balta sits on Rua do Dr. Barbosa de Castro, near the western side of the historic centre.

It is convenient for Clérigos, Virtudes and Miragaia.

The menu is firmly in modern brunch territory, with sweet and savoury breakfast options and specialty coffee.

I like the location because you can eat and immediately begin walking downhill towards one of the nicest parts of the Douro.

Just remember the return journey is uphill.

Porto always collects its debts eventually.

4. Early

Best in Cedofeita

Early is on Rua dos Bragas and fits the Cedofeita mood very well.

It feels more like somewhere to spend a slow morning than somewhere to eat quickly before running to the next monument.

The menu covers breakfast, brunch and lunch, and the location places you away from the busiest part of Baixa.

I would choose this if you are staying around Cedofeita or want breakfast somewhere that feels slightly more neighbourhood based.

Cedofeita is a particularly good area for a slower, neighbourhood-style brunch.

5. Do Norte Café

Best central option

Do Norte Café is on Rua do Almada, minutes from Aliados.

The location could hardly be more useful.

If your day includes São Bento, Clérigos or central Porto, there is no need to cross half the city just to eat eggs.

The brunch menu is substantial enough to count as breakfast and lunch if you take the task seriously.

That can be useful in Porto, where dinner has a habit of becoming bigger than originally planned.

What about a traditional Portuguese breakfast?

You absolutely should have one too.

Go into a normal café and order coffee with a croissant, pão com manteiga or toast.

It will usually cost much less than brunch and takes about a quarter of the time.

I would do both during the same trip.

Modern brunch one morning.

Traditional café breakfast the next.

Balance restored.

When should you go for brunch?

Earlier is better on weekends.

Popular central cafés can fill quickly from late morning onwards.

If you want breakfast rather than lunch disguised as breakfast, arriving around 9am or 10am generally makes the whole experience calmer.
