You do not need to travel far from Porto to find long sandy beaches.
The Atlantic coast stretches both north and south of the city, and several of its best beaches can be reached without renting a car.
Some are better for surfing. Others work for a relaxed beach day, seafood lunch or an easy half-day trip.
If I wanted a proper beach rather than simply walking along the Foz waterfront, these are the places I would look at first.
1. Matosinhos Beach
Best for: easiest beach trip from Porto
Matosinhos is the obvious choice if you want sand, surf and easy transport from the city.
The beach is wide, long and directly connected to an urban area with restaurants, cafés and surf schools.
It is not a remote or particularly wild beach, but that is exactly why it works so well.
You can leave central Porto, spend a few hours at the beach, eat grilled fish in Matosinhos and be back in the historic centre for the evening.
If you only choose one beach outside Porto, this is the easiest recommendation.
2–3. Leça da Palmeira and Praia de Miramar
Leça da Palmeira
Best for: architecture and a quieter coastal day
Continue north from Matosinhos and you reach Leça da Palmeira.
The coastline here feels less urban once you move away from the port.
One of the main reasons to come is the Piscina das Marés, the famous ocean swimming pools designed by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira.
Even without entering the pools, the combination of granite, Atlantic rock and open sea makes this a completely different coastal experience from central Porto.
I would choose Leça if architecture is as important to you as the beach.
Praia de Miramar
Best for: photography and Capela do Senhor da Pedra
South of Porto, Miramar is known for one of the most photographed small chapels in northern Portugal.
The Capela do Senhor da Pedra stands directly on the rocks beside the beach.
At low tide, you can walk around the chapel and see it from different sides, with the Atlantic behind it.
The beach itself is large enough for a proper coastal afternoon, so Miramar works even if you have already taken the photograph you came for.
It is also reachable by suburban train from Porto.
4–5. Praia da Aguda and Espinho
Praia da Aguda
Best for: a smaller fishing-village feel
A little further south is Aguda.
The beach sits beside a small fishing community where traditional boats are still pulled onto the sand.
Compared with Matosinhos, the atmosphere is much quieter.
There are restaurants close to the waterfront, and the wooden walkways along this section of coast make it a good place for a long walk.
You could also combine Aguda and Miramar in the same trip.
Espinho
Best for: a full beach day
Espinho has one of the most established beach cultures close to Porto.
The broad sandy coast attracts surfers, swimmers and people coming down from Porto for the day.
Unlike some smaller coastal stops, Espinho is large enough to have everything you need around the beach.
Trains connect Porto with the town, making it another easy option without a rental car.
If your priority is simply spending several hours on a large beach, Espinho makes more sense than many of the smaller beaches in Foz.
6–7. Praia de Lavadores and Praia da Granja
Praia de Lavadores
Best for: staying close to Porto
Lavadores sits on the Gaia side of the Douro, south of the river mouth.
It is much closer to Porto than Miramar or Espinho and combines sandy areas with the large granite rocks typical of this coastline.
The beach is also connected to a long seafront promenade running through Gaia.
I would consider Lavadores if you want the Atlantic without committing most of the day to travelling.
Praia da Granja
Best for: a quieter alternative to Espinho
Granja sits between Aguda and Espinho and historically developed as a seaside resort.
Today it is noticeably calmer than Matosinhos or central Espinho.
The train makes it accessible from Porto, and the waterfront is particularly pleasant for walking.
If you prefer quieter beaches and do not need surf schools or a large number of restaurants immediately behind you, it is a good option.
Choosing a beach near Porto
North or south of Porto?
For convenience, go north to Matosinhos.
For a more scenic day trip, I prefer the coast south of Porto, particularly Miramar and Aguda.
The railway makes Miramar, Aguda, Granja and Espinho easy to combine with Porto even without a car.
Are the beaches near Porto warm?
Do not expect Algarve water temperatures.
This is the Atlantic, and the sea remains relatively cool even during summer.
The weather can also change quickly near the coast, particularly with wind and fog.
On a sunny summer day, however, the beaches around Porto can be excellent.
