Traditional Porto food is not exactly famous for its restraint around meat.
Francesinha contains enough different meats to look like someone lost a bet.
Tripas are, well, tripas.
Fortunately, modern Porto is very different.
There are now plenty of genuinely good vegetarian and vegan restaurants where plant based food is the point rather than the sad final section of the menu.
These are five places I would try.
1. Espécie - Restaurante Vegetariano
Best overall vegetarian restaurant
Espécie is on Rua da Picaria, right in central Porto.
The menu is vegetarian rather than strictly vegan, and the dishes feel more like a restaurant dinner than health food designed to punish you for enjoying lunch.
That distinction matters.
This is the place I would choose for an evening meal with a mixed group of vegetarians and non vegetarians.
Nobody needs to spend dinner discussing what is missing from the plate.
The central location also makes it easy to continue for drinks around Baixa afterwards.
2. Jardineiro - Vegan Kitchen
Best for a proper vegan dinner
Jardineiro sits on Rua do Almada.
The kitchen is fully vegan and the atmosphere is more refined than the casual vegan café model.
I would choose it for dinner rather than a quick lunch.
It is particularly useful if you are travelling with someone who thinks vegan food means one bowl containing chickpeas, grated carrot and a heroic amount of quinoa.
There is considerably more going on here.

3. Verde Hut Restaurante Vegano
Best casual vegan option
Verde Hut is on Rua de Santa Catarina.
It has a relaxed approach and is particularly convenient if you are exploring Bolhão, Marquês or the northern part of the centre.
This is more of an everyday meal than a special occasion restaurant.
That is not criticism.
Sometimes you simply want good food, reasonable prices and no waiter explaining the emotional journey of a mushroom for twelve minutes.
I would use it for lunch or an uncomplicated dinner.
4. Kind Kitchen
Best central vegan comfort food
Kind Kitchen is on Rua de Ceuta, very close to Clérigos and Aliados.
The location makes it one of the easiest vegan restaurants to fit into a normal sightseeing day.
The food leans towards comfort food rather than minimalist wellness bowls.
Think burgers and satisfying plant based dishes rather than a plate containing six leaves and optimism.
This would be my pick for a casual meal in the centre.

5. Lupin Snack Bar - Vegan à Moda do Porto
Best for vegan versions of Porto food
Lupin is inside Centro Comercial de Cedofeita and takes a particularly interesting approach.
Instead of pretending local Porto food does not exist, it creates vegan versions inspired by it.
That makes it worth seeking out if you want something connected to the city rather than another international vegan menu that could exist in Berlin, London or Bali.
The setting is casual and a little hidden.
You are unlikely to accidentally discover it while walking towards Ribeira.
That somehow makes finding it more satisfying.
Is Porto easy for vegetarians?
Much easier than the traditional cuisine suggests.
In central Porto you will find vegetarian restaurants, vegan restaurants and mainstream places with plant based choices.
The challenge comes when you specifically want traditional Portuguese food.
Many classic dishes rely heavily on meat or fish.
That is why places offering vegan interpretations of local flavours are particularly useful.
What about Portuguese restaurants?
Do not assume a traditional restaurant has a strong vegetarian menu.
Some do.
Others may interpret the request as an invitation to remove the meat from a side salad.
Check the menu beforehand if your group has dietary requirements.
Modern restaurants around Cedofeita and Baixa generally make things much easier.
My picks
For a proper dinner, I would choose Espécie or Jardineiro.
For something casual and central, Kind Kitchen.
For a specifically Porto themed vegan experience, Lupin is the most interesting choice.
And no, you do not need to be vegetarian to enjoy any of them.
That would be a fairly strange business model.
